The new line of ASUS smartphones were unveiled to a select audience during the ASUS ZenFestival held last Wednesday at CHIJMES Hall. SingaSports.com was among the first to get our hands on the new toys.

Unlike most launch events, you know that these products are meant for the masses when there were end users invited. Sure, there was the lack of ostentatious buffet spread and drinks to buy over the partners and media, but it was a delight to see sincere faces light up when they discover the features of the smartphones.

The highlight of the evening were the three new phones, the ZenFone 2 Laser, the ZenFone 2 Selfie and the ZenFone Go. ASUS clearly did not intend to go head to head against the premium smartphones, instead finding their niche in providing stellar build and features without the premium price.

Up first, the ZenFone 2 Laser stays true to its namesake in terms of processor performance. Users got a preview of that at the gaming booth, displaying the phone's console-quality gaming experience.

Most hype was around the ZenFone Selfie, featuring a front camera that's as good (or even better) than it's rear, for obvious reasons. This is a clear indicator of the type of demographic that ASUS is targeting.

On the opposite end of the premium market, ASUS still wants to give you a bang for your buck. At it's price point, the ZenFone Go will make kids disappear from the playground, leaving elders shaking their heads.

Decent build, low price, killer niche feature. The new ASUS smartphones don't promise you everything, though whatever it does are delivered well. If Santa doesn't give you what's on top of your wish list, this comes at a pretty close second.
