The biggest dragonboat race in Singapore is back with its 5th edition that promises bigger incentives for teams to push in every event and a host of attractions to bring in the crowd. Here’s a summary of what to expect at DBS Marina Regatta 2016 (DBSMR).

For Athletes

DBSMR is introducing 3 new ‘theme race’ categories:
  • Singapore’s Finest Paddle-off! – For current or past national athletes
  • Society Gladiators – For participants involved in Singapore-based Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) or Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
  • Prime Warriors – For participants above 45 years old
In partnership with Singapore Canoe Federation, the regatta is hosting a kayak competition on 3 June. The kayak fiesta is open to kids, competitive paddlers and the physically challenged.

The public can also try out kayaking or sailing on the DBS’ 18-metre tall Swedish Match 40 sailboats, which were brought in last year as part of the DBS Marina Bay Sailing Programme.

Prize money for winning teams
An increased prize pool of $230,000 is up for grabs, the highest for dragonboat in Asia. Individual cash prizes will also be awarded for both the 200m and 500m races, unlike previously which was based on combined race results.

For the event, the bay will be transformed into a pop-up urban beach featuring Southeast Asia's tallest inflatable water slide, homegrown talent of up-and-coming artists and musicians, chefs offering fusion cuisines and zorbing for kids. The ‘Paddle for Good’ ergometer challenge is also back to raise funds.
